happY birthdaY re-souL!

Last month was a birthday for re-souL, 11 years under current ownership. It’s not a milestone birthday, but a birthday nonetheless and they all count! To commemorate, we thought it might be fun to do a brief retrospect.

It all started when I (Maggie) decided to take a leap of faith, leave my corporate job of 14 years and open up a shoe store. I wanted to do something on my own. I was burnt out from non-stop travel and corporate politics and I really felt a need to take the risk of entrepreneurship. My husband (Legh) and I had only recently been married and god bless him, he wanted in. So six months later, he joined me full-time and we then became not only partners in life but in business too. It was exciting and scary all at the same time.

This is an embarrassing picture from 2003. We were a year and a half into our business at the time this was published in the newspaper. At the time we were more like a design/lifestyle shop than a shoe store. Although we both had plenty of retail experience, this was the first time either of us had done something on our own. It was an honor to be featured in the Seattle Times.  We were proud to be part of the small business community, as we still are today.

Over the years we have met countless people as customers, as neighbors, as vendors and just passersby. There are many incredible folks that we have been lucky enough to call friends. I think if we had to pick the one best part of running your own business it is building relationships with your customers and vendors. Some have been with us since the beginning and others are recently new to re-souL but we love all of them the same.

The shop has evolved over the years. We took over a business which sold vintage and modern furnishings and accessories. It quickly became a modern lifestyle home furnishings store that sold shoes, jewelry and leather accessories. Over the years, our reputation for hard-to-find footwear grew and though there is much less of the home furnishings, we still stay true to our modern roots. We like to think there is an overall theme of “good design” which guides our shop and we’re not sure it will ever look like a traditional shoe store.

In closing, we would like to thank you, because there is no way we could have done it without you! You are our kind and loyal customers, our friends and neighbors who, 11 years on, still say the nicest things and give us the encouragement to be who we are and do what we do. Thank you, thank you for all of your generous support throughout the years.  We appreciate your patronage and we hope to continue to have a reason to visit, season after season.  You rock!
